The art of Shibari is a curious and wonderful thing that it inspires so many different artists and their interpretations. Cases in point are the exciting one-woman shows available for view on this page. And now to the legendary Saotome Hiromi and the skillful Kuritorisu we must add the athletic, talented and very beautiful, Asagi Ageha!
Already famous as Osada Steve’s principal collaborator in his brilliant displays of rope mastery, Ageha takes center stage alone this time to conjure up something completely different. It’s nothing less than an aerial rope ballet and it’s somehow fitting that this wonderful submissive, who’s helplessly dangled so many times in Osada Steve’s tsuri, should use this technique to create her own quite brilliant solo show.
Beginning slowly and bathed in purple light, Ageha dances erotically to an energetic score. The rope appears halfway through the performance as she dazzles with a lightning fast single-rope, single-leg inverted suspension (ippon nawa kata-ashi sakasa-zuri) , in which to twirl, soar and spin sexily over the heads of her audience. This is one brave performer! Clothing removed, a fast waist tie leads to a dramatic nude spiral that transforms itself into a variety of artfully choreographed maneuvers that any circus aerialist would be proud of. The feeling here isn’t one of capture but of freedom and Ageha celebrates it and her beautiful naked form by quite literally flying in the ropes!
